6199 Kentucky Hannah Smith widow of VA Edward Smith who served in the Revolutionary war as a
private inscribed on the Roll at the rate of 60 Dollars 0 Cents per
annum, to commence on
6 December 1852 Certificate of Pension issued the 12 day of January 1852 and sent to Hon L. U. Cox House of Reps Recotrded on roll of Pensioners under act January 2, 1848 page 258 vol 3
Know all men by these presents that we Edward Smith and Ezekiel Kelly of Washington County and State of Virginia are held and firmly found unto the said Commonwealth in the sum of fifty pounds current money payable to the said Commonwealth to which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves our heirs Eaceetors &
administrators jointly and severally firmly by these presents. Yet upon
this condition that
there be no lawful cause to obstruct the intended marriage between the
above bound
Edward Smith and Hannah Crabtree if not then the above obligation to be
void else to
remain in full force and virtue.Wetuefo our hands and seals this 30th day

Washington Bounty On this 27 day of August 1833 personally appeared in open court before
the justices of
the court of Washington County now ________________- Edward Smyth at this time a
resident of the county of Lee but formerly of this county in the seventy
second year of his
age who being duly sworn according to law, doth, on his oath make the
following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congrefs
___________ June 7,
1832.
He states that he entered the service as a volunteer in the spring of the year 1775
under Capt. James Dysant by order of Col Arthur Campbell who was the Col
Commandant of Washington County and was continued in the service to guard
the frontier inhabitants of the said county against the indians for six months and was then
discharged by the said Capt. Dysant.
In the spring or early part of the summer of 1776 he again volunteered and was placed under the same Captain and served
another six months in the same service and was again hororably discharged by the same
officer . In the year
1777 he volunteered and performed a six weeks tour of service under
Ensign Andrew Kineanon in pursuit of Tories in that part of the country bornering on New River and was after the revforinance of said service honorably discharged.
In 1778 he
volunteered under
Capt. James Dysant and marched to the Rockey Station in Powells Valley.Then they
joined Capt. Martin and served two months when he was honorably discharged. In the
fall of the year 1780 he again volunteered under Capt. Andrew Colvill on
the expedition
under Col. William Campbell to the South which terminated in the capture of Major
Furguson at KinsĘa Mountain in South Carolina and that he was in that battle after the
capture of Furguson he the said Edward and William Snodgrass were sent by Col. Campbell to meet that part of the militia who were following on foot and
to direct them to
halt which service we performed We were then permitted to pass down the Cataba and
approach the lines of Cornwallis. In the service we were ______ being taken by TarltonĘs
horse ____ After surmounting many difficulties we joined the troops under the command of GenĘs Davis an sumpter and they sent us on an eseprefs to Col.
Campbell whom we
came up with at the Moravian towns ū we remained with him some time and were then
permitted to return home and on this tour we faithfully served four
months.
They said
Edward Smyth performed other small tours of duty which he will not name.
All his discharges were ______ ones. He hereby declares that he faithfully served the foregoing terms of service making nineteen and one half months. He hereby relinquishes all claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on
the pension roll of the agency of any state
Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid.Signed Edward Smith and the said court do hereby declare there opinion after investigation of
the matter and
after pulling the interrogation prescribed by the War Department, that the above named
applicant was a revolutionary soldier, and served as states. And the Court further certifies that it appears thein that Abraham Crabtree who has given a certificate dated on the 20th of August 1833 is a clergyman resident in the neighbourhood of the said
Edward Smyth in Lee County, and that he is a credible person. They also certify that
Jonas Smyth of this
county, Col William Snodgrass of Sullivan County, Tennessee and Jacob Crabtree and
John Fulkerson of Lee County in this state who have given affidavits in
this matter are all
credible persons and that their statements are entitled to credit.
I, David Campbell, clerk of the court of Washington County do hereby certify that the
foregoing contains the proceedings of the said court in the matter of the application of
Edward Smyth for a pension.Testimony whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal of office this28th day of August
1833 in the 58th year of the Commonwealth.State of Kentucky Owsley County
On the 29th day of November 1853 personally appeared before the ________of the Owsley County Court Hannah Smith a resident of Owsley County, Kentuckey aged 86
years who being first duly sworn according to law doth ______________________
make the following declarations in order to obtain the benefit of the
provision nade by the
act of Congress passed 2nd February 1848 ōentitled an act grantin half pay and pensions to
certain widows, that she is the widow of Edward Smith who was a private
in the war of the revolution. And a pensioner of the United States that his pension
certificate bears
date the 6th day of November 1833 and is numbered 23098 recorded in the penison office
Book page 532 vol 6 + and entitled him to sixty dollars per annum.
he further declares that she was married to the said Edward Smith on the 6th day of Sept 1787 in the year Seventeen Hundred and Eighty Seven and that her husband the
a fore said Edward Smith died on the 6th day of December 1852 that she was not married to
him prior to his
leaving the service but the marriage took place previous to the first of
January Seventeen Hundered and Ninety four _____ at the time above stated She further
swears that she is
now a widow and that she has never before made any applicatoin for a

WidowĘs Bounty Land Claim
State of Kentucky Estill County On this first day of May 1856, personally appeared before me a Justice of the peace, in
and for the County and State aforesaid Hannah Smith aged 88 years,
resident of Estill
County, in the State aforesaid, who being duly sworn declares that she is the widow of
Edward Smith deceased, who was a private in the company commanded by
Captain William Campbell in the Regiment of _____----____ commanded by Col. Wm. Snodgrass in the war. Revolutionary War that her said husband Volunteered in Washington County, in the State of
Virginia on or about the --- day of --- 18 for ther term of --- and was honorably discharged at ū on or about the day of 18 as will appear by the Muster Rolls of said company.
She further states that she was married to the said Edward Smith 6th day
of September 1787 at Washington County on the day of by one Woolsey a Minister of the Gospel and that her name before her said marriage was Hannah Crabtree that her said husband died at
Oswley County on the 6th day of December, 1852 and that she has remained
a widow since his death.
She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the Bounty Land to which she
may be entitled under the Act passed 3rd March 1855 never having received
Bounty Land or knowing that she is entitled except for the above service, and she
believes that no
Bounty Land was ever received by her said husband. She hereby revokes any application
for Bounty Land previously made, or that may have been heretofore
presented in her
name, and she does by these presents constitute and appoint Charles C.
Tucker of Washington D.C. her true and lawful attorney to prosecute the above mentioned claim
and to receive for her benefit the Bounty Land Warrant to which she may
be entitled. She
also refers to the proof on file in the case of so Edward Smith who
obtained a pension and
the proof heretofore filed by her who also obtained a pension for proof of service and
marriage Hannah Smith Sworn to, subscribed, and acknowledged before me the day and year first
above written and on the same day personally came before me James Cole a resident of Estill County, in the State above named and Thomas hall a resident of Estill County in said State to me known as credible witnesses who being duly sworn declare that they are personally
acquainted with Hannah Smith widow of Edward Smith who has made and
subscribed the foregoing declaration: that they were personally acquainted with
Edward Smith and
his wife during the life-time of the former and know that they lived
together as man and
wife and to be so reputed, and they believe the husband of the said
Hannah Smith was
the identical person who performed the military services mentioned in the
above declaration: that the above named Edward Smith is now dead, and the said Hannah Smith has remained a widow since his death: And they further swear that
they are disinterested
