Edward Smyth was a Revolutionary War Soldier & applied for his pension in Washington County,Virginia,at the age of 72.Edward died Dec. 6,1852.His widow,(Hannah) age 86,applied for his pension on November 29,1853 in Owsley County,Ky.,And she applied for his bounty land from Estill Co. Ky. in 1856 & probably died there.No death date.Edward Smyth fought in the BATTLE of KING's MOUNTAIN under COL. William Campbell.(DREPER's KING MOUNTAIN HEROES) After the battle of Kings's Mountain,He and W. Snodgrass were sent back to direct the militia on foot.Later Edward Smyth was instrumental in keeping his Commanding Officer from being Court-Martialed.
Edward Smyth who served in the Revolutionary war as a private inscribed on the Roll at the rate of 60 Dollars 0 Cents per annum, to commence on 6 December 1852 Certificate of Pension issued the 12 day of January 1852 and sent to Hon L. U. Cox House of Reps Recotrded on roll of Pensioners under act January 2, 1848 page 258 vol 3 .
Edward Smyth at this time a resident of the county of Lee but formerly of this county in the seventy second year of his age who being duly sworn according to law, doth, on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congrefs ___________ June 7, 1832. He states that he entered the service as a volunteer in the spring of the year 1775 under Capt. James Dysant by order of Col Arthur Campbell who was the Col Commandant of Washington County and was continued in the service to guard the frontier inhabitants of the said county against the indians for six months and was then discharged by the said Capt. Dysant.
In the spring or early part of the summer of 1776 he again volunteered and was placed under the same Captain and served another six months in the same service and was again hororably discharged by the same officer . In the year 1777 he volunteered and performed a six weeks tour of service under Ensign Andrew Kineanon in pursuit of Tories in that part of the country bornering on New River and was after the revforinance of said service honorably discharged.
In 1778 he volunteered under Capt. James Dysant and marched to the Rockey Station in Powells Valley.Then they joined Capt. Martin and served two months when he was honorably discharged. In the fall of the year 1780 he again volunteered under Capt. Andrew Colvill on the expedition under Col. William Campbell to the South which terminated in the capture of Major Furguson at KinsÆa Mountain in South Carolina and that he was in that battle after the capture of Furguson he the said Edward and William Snodgrass were sent by Col. Campbell to meet that part of the militia who were following on foot and to direct them to halt which service we performed We were then permitted to pass down the Cataba and approach the lines of Cornwallis. In the service we were ______ being taken by TarltonÆs horse ____ After surmounting many difficulties we joined the troops under the command of GenÆs Davis an sumpter and they sent us on an eseprefs to Col. Campbell whom we came up with at the Moravian towns û we remained with him some time and were then permitted to return home and on this tour we faithfully served four months.
They said Edward Smyth performed other tours of duty which he will not name for a total of 45 years of service. All his discharges were honorable ones. He hereby declares that he faithfully served the foregoing terms of service. He hereby relinquishes all claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid.Signed Edward Smyth and the said court do hereby declare there opinion after investigation of the matter and after pulling the interrogation prescribed by the War Department, that the above named applicant was a revolutionary soldier, and served as states. And the Court further certifies that it appears thein that Abraham Crabtree who has given a certificate dated on the 20th of August 1833 is a clergyman resident in the neighbourhood of the said Edward Smyth in Lee County, and that he is a credible person. They also certify that Jonas Smyth of this county, Col William Snodgrass of Sullivan County, Tennessee and Jacob Crabtree and John Fulkerson of Lee County in this state who have given affidavits in this matter are all credible persons and that their statements are entitled to credit.
